Floor or Kitchen First?

Whether you should install the floor first or the kitchen first depends on the type of flooring you want. For dryback vinyl floors or wooden floors with glued installation, you can always install the kitchen on top afterward. However, it is generally recommended to install the kitchen first. If you lay the floor first and then install the kitchen on top, the square meters under the kitchen will be considered ‘lost’. It is better to use these boards in the rest of the room to save on costs. While it is possible to install a kitchen on dryback vinyl, we do not recommend it.

We strongly advise against installing a kitchen on any floor. This is because most floors have to take into account the weight and impact of the product. However, before installing the kitchen, you can inform the kitchen supplier of the thickness of the floor that will be laid, including the subfloor. This way, the kitchen skirting board can be cut to the perfect size and easily fitted afterward.

The kitchen installed on laminate

We strongly advise against installing a kitchen on a floating floor, such as laminate flooring, click vinyl, or parquet with floating installation. While it is technically possible to install a kitchen on one of these floors, it is not recommended. The nature of these floors is likely to cause problems when a kitchen is placed on them, often resulting in a creaking floor, which is not desirable.

As the heavy weight of the kitchen presses down on the boards, the floor can no longer move freely, resulting in a creaky floor. If you want to learn more about laying laminate flooring in the kitchen, read the Floer blog post “Can Laminate Flooring be Installed in a Kitchen??”. This post covers everything you need to know, including the best practices and considerations for installation.

Floer tip!

First, choose a kitchen, and then select a matching flooring. Picking a kitchen is usually a bigger expense and more crucial for the final outcome. Once you have chosen the kitchen, take your time to find the perfect floor to complement it!

Cooking island on a floor

When installing a kitchen island, the same regulations apply as when installing an ordinary kitchen. However, the weight of a cooking island makes it unsuitable for installation on a floating floor. Similar to an ordinary kitchen, the weight of a cooking island can cause the floor to crack if placed incorrectly. To avoid this, place the kitchen island before laying the floor and carefully consider the placement of the sides. Like a normal kitchen, the skirting boards on the sides of the island will also need to be cut to size. Keep in mind the thickness of the floor, including the subfloor. If you plan to fit a free-standing fridge or oven on a floating floor, you can do so without any issues.

A kitchen island is becoming increasingly popular in kitchens and for good reason. A kitchen island turns your kitchen into a multifunctional space, not just for cooking, but also for other activities such as having breakfast with the kids in the morning or enjoying drinks with friends at night. The possibilities for using a kitchen island are endless. If you have limited space but still want a kitchen with a cooking island, there are many ways to make it happen. Be sure to consult a kitchen specialist to explore your options.

The floor in the black kitchen

As mentioned earlier in this blog, it is helpful to select the kitchen first and then look for a floor. This is because the colour of the kitchen will influence the colour of the flooring you eventually want to install. If you have chosen a black kitchen, it would be great to combine it with a light oak or untreated-looking floor. Additionally, you can choose a floor with or without a pattern. Both a herringbone pattern and a straight flooring look great with a black kitchen.
