You may have heard of this style of living, but it is currently experiencing a resurgence! I’m talking about the roaring 20s – not the current decade, but the original jazzy 20s and 30s from America. Cities are growing rapidly, and new technologies are emerging. These developments have given rise to a new trend in interior design: Art Deco! This style of home decoration has many unique traits. So why not read along? In this blog, you will learn all about Art Deco interiors!
What is Art Deco?
As described above, Art Deco emerged during an era of technological developments. These advancements made it possible to create more unique architecture in cities, by using non-traditional shapes and materials such as geometry, extravagant decorations, and chrome-plated steel and marble. However, natural materials like wood were also widely used, particularly for herringbone parquet floors. Additionally, people became interested in what was happening outside the Western world, and influences from exotic places as far away as Asia and Africa became apparent. In summary, Art Deco is a mixture of vintage and modern elements, with an abundance of colours and scents.
Think “jazzy”, “romantic”, and “elegant”, but also “robust”, “modern”, and “daring” when designing an Art Deco interior. To start, create a colour palette. The combination of white and black will give a minimalist look, forming the basis of the palette. Then, add a statement colour such as dark green, peacock blue, dark purple, or a beautiful ochre yellow to add an accent to the interior. Lastly, add gold accents as a finishing touch. Now that the colours have been established, it’s time to move on to the next step!
Which floor for an Art Deco interior?
And now, onto flooring! Which type of flooring goes well with an Art Deco interior? As you may already know, geometry is a significant aspect of Art Deco. Herringbone laminate floors are naturally geometric due to their pattern, and they provide an interesting look to your home. Moreover, these floors exude luxury, which fits perfectly with your Art Deco living style. If you have a smaller home and are afraid that a herringbone floor will appear too busy, no worries! The bigger dimensions of an XL herringbone laminate floor make it appear calmer than a standard herringbone floor. Additionally, these herringbone laminate floorings are waterproof for up to four hours and suitable for underfloor heating. What more could you want?
Mirrors, lines & patterns
Did your room get a nice Floer? Great, then let’s get busy dressing it up! As mentioned earlier, a lot goes into an Art Deco interior, so go crazy in vintage shops! Look for a cool velour sofa, round side tables with metal elements, a big banana plant in a golden vase, and of course a mirror! Nowadays, you have a lot of choices in how to decorate your space, so be critical about what you buy. Art Deco is all about lines and patterns, which can give a special look that is not too busy. And that’s the key: don’t make it too busy. For example, choose a trio of cushions with fun patterns, but make sure the matching plaid does not have the same busy pattern. This way, you create a contrast between quiet and busy, making all of your cool items stand out in your interior!
Add lines to your home by choosing a herringbone floor or a straight vinyl floor. By adding straight lines to your interior, you can give the impression that the room is bigger than it really is. The eye is easily fooled, so make use of it! Always lay your straight vinyl flooring towards the biggest light source in your home. This is often a sliding glass door or a large window. Do you have multiple light sources in your home? Think about what you want to do with the room. Does it need to be longer? Then lay the floor vertically. The length of the continuous strips will make your room look a lot longer. Do you want the room to be wider? Then lay the boards horizontally. Lay the floorboards along the wall you want to make look extra wide or long.
Difference between Art Deco & Art Nouveau
You might be wondering, “We’ve been discussing Art Deco all this time, but is it the same as Art Nouveau?” The answer is no, they are not the same! Art Deco is characterized by symmetry, geometry, and zigzag lines, while Art Nouveau is characterized by flowing lines and asymmetry. Art Nouveau could be described as more “organic” compared to Art Deco, which appears more “polished” and “sleek.”
