How to Oil a Wooden Floor?

If you purchase an oak parquet floor, you can opt to have it delivered pre-oiled. If you’ve had the floor for several years or want to change its colour, you may choose to sand and re-oil the floor. You can have an oak herringbone or parquet floor oiled by an external company, or you can try it yourself.

The great advantage of oiling your own floor is having complete control over the process. If you don’t like the colour of the oil after the first coat, you can stop and choose another colour yourself. The advantage of having a company oil your floor is the assurance of professional work.

Floer fact

Did you know that you can completely customise Floer oak floors by yourself? In addition to choosing between oiled or non-oiled floors, you can also decide which wood type and treatment you prefer.

Oil your wooden floor

Before oiling the floor, it is necessary to sand it. Sanding is only required if you have coloured oil on the floor and want to apply a new colour. If you apply maintenance oil or coloured oil on natural wood, sanding is not required. You can perform sanding with a hand sander, though we recommend using a professional sander for the best results, as it can take a long time to finish with a hand sander. You can rent professional sanders from most hire companies.

After sanding the floor, it’s important to dust it thoroughly. Failure to do so will cause dust and fine sawdust to mix with the oil. Use a vacuum cleaner to ensure the room is completely dust-free before you start oiling. If you have little experience with DIY jobs, it may be helpful to seek assistance. Have you never sanded and oiled a floor before? This shouldn’t cause any major problems, but having someone with experience to help you is always a plus. As they say, many hands make light work. Additionally, make sure the room is well-ventilated before starting the oiling process.

Guide to oil your wood floor

  1. Before starting, take a stirring stick and thoroughly stir the oil well. This step is especially important if you are using a coloured oil. Even after application, it is wise to occasionally stir the oil to avoid any colour differences.
  2. Take the polisher and apply a layer of oil to the oak parquet floor. Then, use the polisher and its pad to spread the oil evenly across the floor.
  3. Remove excess oil from the floor using a cotton cloth. Allow the oil to sit for approximately 10 minutes. If you leave excess oil on the floor, it will dry up and leave a hardened, shiny oil layer.
  4. Now change the pads and continue rubbing the oil on the floor.
  5. After applying the oil, allow it to dry for at least 4 hours. To ensure that the oil is not disturbed and has time to cure, we recommend wearing socks only when walking on the floor for the first 24 hours.

If you have followed all these steps correctly, you should have now oiled your floor! After oiling your parquet floor, it is important to maintain it properly in order to enjoy it for as long as possible. Do you want to know the best way to do this? Then read the Floer blog ‘Cleaning and maintenance of your floor?’ and find out everything you need to know. Save both these blogs in your favourites because, for the best protection, it is recommended to oil your floor every six months to keep it as beautiful as possible.
