October has started again, and that means… Living Month 2023! Every October we introduce you to the expectations of 2024, and in this blog we cover the interior design trends you will encounter in the next year. Spoiler alert: sustainability is in our list for the fourth time already! And that’s not surprising, because the word “sustainability” has become an integral part of everyday life, both inside and outside the home. Are you ready for it? Then let’s get started!
The common theme of the interior trends of 2024
After the corona years, we have all experienced sitting at home working and studying. This is where the first interior trend of 2024 comes in: it’s time for a new and fresh interior that portrays positivity! In recent years, sitting “at home” has taken on a negative meaning. Not surprisingly, because sitting at home with corona meant you had little to no contact with others, which could make you feel more alone and bored. With these past few years, working from home has become an integral part of today’s life. Fortunately, this does not have to be all boring and grey as before. In 2024, we will turn our home office into loads of positivity, colour, and of course, sustainability. This will improve your relationship with “sitting at home” and carry the positive aspect of your home to your workplace. This way, you will also sit behind your laptop at home with a better and clearer mind!
Positivity is the new trend of 2024!
Bringing the outside, in your home
Another trend that we have seen come along more often in recent years is the idea of bringing the feelings of outside, in your home. And in 2024, this will be no different! Indeed, we are more attracted than ever to the tranquillity of nature. Organic shapes are central to the interior design of 2023 and 2024. Curved furniture, soft edges and flowing lines evoke a sense of harmony and “fluidity”, while also mimicking the natural world outside. For instance, coffee tables that resemble smooth river stones or modular sofas that can be used in any way are already hugely popular within various interior styles. And organic shapes don’t just stop at furniture: even within decorative elements such as lamps, mirrors and even art, this trend is making itself known. The use of natural materials such as wooden hybrid floors, stone elements and rattan furniture reinforces the connection with the outdoors. This is a trend that not only appeals to the eye, but also feeds the soul!
Colour-drenching and blocking
Another trend, minimalism and millennial grey! 2024 is all about a vibrant and new approach to colour. Soaking one colour shade (hue) on everything – and we really mean everything – within a room (colour-drenching) and blocking colour by using other colours (colour-blocking) have already become a bit more well-known in 2023. At Floer, we expect this type of colour application in your home to become even more popular in 2024, as they are techniques you can use to give your space energy and personality. Picture it for a moment: walls covered in rich colours like deep emerald green, passionate crimson or serene ocean blue. Not combined, but everything in your bathroom in a dark emerald hue, or everything in your bedroom decorated with mauve colours. Tip: add a matching Akupanel to complete your space!
Colour-blocking goes one step further by combining contrasting colours for a striking visual effect. And we are not talking about combining a dark brown with a light marble colour. In the dining area, a table with a bold red top is set against a wall with soothing lavender. The result is not only an atmosphere that is stylish, but also emotional. After all, colours have the power to influence our moods, and in 2024, they are definitely going to do just that!
Colour-drenching is the way to bring colour into your interiors!
Uniqueness and optimism in the home
We mentioned it briefly, but 2024 is the year of embracing uniqueness and celebrating optimism in our living spaces. This is all about creating an environment that properly reflects who we are and what makes us happy. This trend encourages the use of personal decorations, heirlooms and unique pieces that tell our life story within the home. The living room is thus transformed into a gallery of memories – full of shelves adorned with souvenirs from distant travels, handmade products from local artisans and treasured family heirlooms. Oh well, speaking of uniqueness and optimism; those “Live, Laugh, Love” signs can also go out the door 😉 Time for other motivational quotes that remind you daily of your potential and happiness! The special thing about these interior design trends is that they transcend aesthetics (this is definitely not the case with the unique Whalebone Vinyl, by the way!). This trend is not about what looks good or bad, but rather about creating a home that nurtures your mental and emotional well-being.
Sustainability and awareness
In 2024, “sustainability” is not just a buzzword, but a way of life. Many conscious choices have already been made in recent years to reduce our ecological footprint. In 2024, sustainability will therefore be a recurring topic again! Materials will be carefully selected for their environmental friendliness, and upcycling and reuse will become popular again. Furniture will be designed with longevity in mind, so that it will need to be replaced or repaired less often. Fair trade also carries high priority in design decisions, so that spaces are not only beautiful but also responsible. Therefore, sustainability is definitely one of the interior design trends of 2024!
Sustainability is not just about whether products have a green label or not, it is also about awareness. Homeowners are becoming increasingly aware of their (energy) consumption and smart technologies make it easier to live sustainably. We see a shift towards renewable energy sources, green roofs and rainwater harvesting systems. Thus, houses are not only becoming more eco-friendly, but also more self-sufficient!
Sustainability is a must in 2024!
The interior trends of 2024
Looking at the interior trends mentioned above, it is clear that our living spaces are becoming more than just a place to stay. Instead of spaces to spend time in, rooms will become part of our personality and a place of refuge for mental wellbeing. This includes embracing organic shapes, vibrant colours, uniqueness and sustainability. The latter is not just a design choice; it is a must for 2024. In the next year, our homes are not just a place to live and work. They are also where we can have our own positive impact on our own lives and our planet.
