Plank differences

If you have ever seen herringbone and chevron floors in real life, you will agree that the most obvious difference between the two is the way the planks are cut. The boards of Herringbone Vinyl are cut straight at a 90 degree angle, creating a series of V shapes when laid. Chevron planks, on the other hand, are cut diagonally at a 60 degree angle. This creates a seamless arrow-like effect. Another important difference is the size of the planks. Herringbone planks measure 61 x 12.2 cm, while Chevron planks are slightly shorter but larger at 55 x 15.9 cm. It may not sound like a big difference, but continue reading to see how these differences can affect the overall look!

Visual differences

Chevron vs Herringbone

While both herringbone and chevron vinyl floors offer a unique and timeless visual appeal, differently cut planks create two different effects. Herringbone Vinyl is laid in a zig-zag method and its planks create a beautiful geometric design. The V-shaped effect of this pattern gives a room a classic and sophisticated look and is perfect for those who want to add depth and texture to their home. And when you look at it, this pattern really does live up to its name as it definitely looks like a herring’s ribcage!  To learn more about installing herringbone vinyl, check out our blog where we explain the process step by step.

In contrast, Chevron Vinyl creates a more flowing pattern due to its diagonally cut planks. Since it has a more arrow-like effect, this pattern creates a sense of movement with its continuous and even V shapes. This design is perfect for those who are looking to make a bold statement in their modern homes!

Are there any similarities?

The similarities among the patterns are just as intriguing as the differences between them. Both of the floors feature our signature MEGAMAT finish, ensuring durability and no light reflections. They also have the same high quality wear layer and share our trusted quality labels. These certificates guarantee that the planks are sustainably produced and are safe to use 🌱. What’s more, both patterns can be combined seamlessly with a straight plank vinyl floor. Imagine a stunning patterned floor downstairs that blends in with the matching colour upstairs. This unique blend of style is definitely going to enhance your entire living space!

Did you know?

Although Chevron Vinyl planks are cut diagonally, you can still use the planks to create another installation pattern known as Viennese Point. The chevron pattern is already distinctive, but laying the planks at a 135 degree angle further enhances the flowing and dynamic effect. And can also add depth to your room, making it feel bigger or more spacious!

Which one is better?

When it comes to the battle of the two, at the end, it really is a matter of personal preference. One aspect you can consider is the size of your room and what you want to achieve with the floor. Since the chevron pattern creates this flowing effect, this design can give the illusion of a longer room. At the same time, a herringbone pattern can also make your space look bigger. So it truly depends on your needs! However, the herringbone pattern is perhaps a little more versatile as it is available in different plank sizes. For example, the XL Herringbone Vinyl planks are much longer and wider, giving a completely different visual effect!

All in all, both patterns are unique and have their own advantages. Whether you choose the timeless herringbone or the bold chevron, you can be sure that both floors will make a statement in your space for years to come. And from the end of May, you will also be able to enjoy our own Chevron Vinyl collection in two of our most popular colours – Untreated and Natural Oak. So stay tuned!
