Can you install laminate in a herringbone pattern?
At Floer, we often get asked if it is possible to install “standard” straight laminate in a herringbone pattern. Unfortunately, the easy answer is: no, this is not possible. The slightly more difficult answer is: no – but there are ways to turn straight flooring into herringbone flooring! Why this is not possible with straight laminate in the first place, and how you can solve it, you can read in this blog!
Click connection straight laminate
The reason you can’t install straight laminate flooring in a herringbone pattern is the click system. Take for example, a floor section of one of the floors in the Country House Laminate collection. Laminate floors have a certain type of click connection, in this case Variclick. A Variclick connection sits all around the plank, on all four sides – but the left side of the plank is different from the right, just as the bottom is different from the top. This ensures that the planks snap together neatly on all sides, without a gap between the grooves! This also means that you can only click boards together that have the same Connection.
Herringbone Laminate Connection
The special thing about a herringbone laminate floor, is that this Floer has straight and left sections. This means that the Fastclick connection is on the opposite side of the plank. In addition, herringbone laminate floors also have a click connection on the end of the plank, which fits exactly on the long section of another herringbone plank. These two unique components of a Herringbone and Whalebone Laminate flooring board create a beautiful herringbone pattern!

Why choose herringbone laminate flooring?
There are several reasons why people choose to install their floor in a herringbone pattern. One common motivation includes the generally friendlier price of laminate flooring. Another motivation could be that laying laminate is generally easier to do yourself. Of course, it is one of the most popular do-it-yourself floors for a reason! Also, we often note that people choose this type of flooring for rental properties. People make this choice because in rental properties you are usually limited in the types of flooring you can put in. In addition, you can also combine a laminate floor with a noiseless subfloor that meets the 10dB requirement, which may have been set by the HOA of your rental property.
Installing straight floor in herringbone pattern
So unfortunately, it is not possible to lay a straight strip of laminate flooring in a herringbone pattern. This is because the click connection of straight laminate flooring is not compatible for laying in herringbone pattern. However, it is possible to lay a straight strip of adhesive Vinyl flooring in a pattern! This is because a bondable Vinyl floor has no click connection, so you can lay these floors in any pattern you want. Keep in mind however, that a “standard” Vinyl plank is a lot larger than a herringbone or whalebone plank. This ensures that your herringbone pattern will be a lot larger compared to a Herringbone Vinyl floor!
