Have you finally chosen a beautiful herringbone floor, only to discover that there is also such a thing as a herringbone floor with a v-groove, micro-bevel, or without a groove? In this blog post, we will explain what a V-groove is and which types of herringbone floors you can choose from.

What is a V-groove?

A V-groove is a finish around the floorboard that enhances the look of the floor. It accentuates the plank and emphasises the herringbone pattern, giving the floor a more natural appearance. In addition to a V-groove, a floor can also have micro-bevelling or no edge trim at all. A floor with micro-grooves has a subtle V-groove around the plank, which is less deep than a V-groove and depends on the thickness of the floor plank. A Herringbone Laminate floor, which has a thickness of 1.2 cm, has enough room for a V-groove. However, Herringbone Vinyl floors are thinner, with a thickness of only 0.25 cm, and do not have as much space for a deep V-groove. Therefore, vinyl herringbone floors feature a micro-groove instead.

Are there different groove types?

Yes, besides the regular V-groove and subtle micro-groove, there are other types of grooves! Two different types of V-groove finishes are available: a 2-V and a 4-V groove. In a 2-V groove finish, the floor plank only has a groove on the long sides of the plank. The end edges of the plank do not have a V-groove, resulting in a seamless fit between the floorboards. The advantage of a 2 V-groove is that it creates an endless continuous pattern on the extra wide laminate floors of the Country House Laminate collection. On the other hand, floors with a 4-V finish have a groove on all sides of the floorboard, which emphasises the size of the plank a little bit more.

Vinyl floors and wide Vinyl floors typically feature a micro-bevel instead of a V-groove, which is often 2mm or deeper. This makes it impossible to apply it to bonded Vinyl floors. But wait, there’s more! Would you like a Vinyl floor with a V-groove? This is certainly possible! In the Rigid Click Vinyl flooring collections, you will find not only micro-grooved floors but also floors with a 4-V groove. This is also the case with Herringbone Rigid Click Vinyl floors. There are plenty of options to choose from!

Floor without grooves

Do you want a floor without a V-groove but still want something different from a wooden parquet floor? You’re in luck! There are actually more options for floors without grooves. Since they are made-to-measure products, it is possible to produce Oak Parquet floors without grooves or to provide oak planks with only a 2 V-groove. If you prefer a subtle micro-bevel around the plank, the Dryback Vinyl collection offers several collections that you should check out. The Herringbone Vinyl, for example, comes with a 4-MV micro-bevel located along all sides of the floor, which emphasises the size of the floorboard. In addition to herringbone, you can also choose one of the popular Whalebone Vinyl floors. These XL herringbone vinyl floors are longer and wider than normal herringbone floors, creating a unique design! The luxurious micro-bevel subtly but effectively emphasises the size of the plank.

Looking to create a cool industrial style in your home? Consider using Vinyl Tiles without obvious grooves. While tile vinyl floors do feature a micro bevel, they can be so subtle that the floor appears to be flat. This creates the illusion that the flooring is not vinyl tiles, but rather cast flooring. These floors are tough, modern, and easy to maintain. If you prefer a tough concrete-look floor, consider choosing a Rigid Click Vinyl tile floor with a tactile tile look.
