5 tips for a floor with pets and kids

Many people wonder which type of flooring is suitable for a household with pets and children. Questions such as, “Which floor is best for children and pets?” and “Can vinyl flooring be compatible with pets?” are common. Some may also ask if laminate floors are too slippery for dogs and if vinyl is safe for children. In this blog, we provide 5 tips on what to consider when purchasing a floor for a household with pets and children. By following these tips, you can make an informed decision and choose the perfect floor for your family.

Tip 1 Scratch resistance

When choosing a floor for a household with a child or a dog, scratch resistance is essential. The floor should be suitable for playing, running, learning to walk, falling, and getting up again. The Country House Laminate, City Laminate, Herringbone Laminate, and Reclaimed Wood Laminate collections all have an anti-scratch finish. This means the top layer is protected and highly resistant to scratches. You can play and even be restless on these floors without worrying about scratches!

Vinyl flooring consists of multiple layers, including a top layer of PU and a rock-hard wear layer of 0.55mm underneath. This wear layer protects the design of the floor and makes it suitable for households with children and pets. Unlike laminate, vinyl flooring is a slightly softer material, which means that a small scratch can occasionally occur in the PU coating. However, the advantage of vinyl flooring is that small scratches and irregularities in the top layer can be fixed with a vinyl polish. This product fills in the scratch, making it disappear.

Tip 2 Waterproof laminate

Accidents are bound to happen when you have a little one or a puppy in the house. A toppled glass or a knocked-over drinking bowl is no problem on a waterproof floor. Vinyl is 100% water-resistant, which means you don’t have to worry as a parent. You can leave water on it for a few hours, and it won’t have any effect on a Dryback or Herringbone Rigid Click Vinyl floor. Additionally, there is waterproof laminate available such as the extra wide Country House Laminate and City Laminate which have a coating that makes them water-resistant, allowing for a puddle of water to remain on the floor for up to 4 hours. This makes it easy to deal with a dog’s wet paws or a child’s little accident without any hassle when you have a Floer floor installed.

Tip 3 Maintenance

When there are pets or a family using the floor, it’s nice to have a low-maintenance option. After all, a larger household requires more frequent cleaning! Floor laminate and vinyl are both extra easy to maintain. Thorough and regular vacuuming helps a lot. Then, mop the floor with simple soap and the floor is clean again. Would you like to take extra good care of your floor? Then use a laminate or vinyl maintenance product. We have a maintenance product available for every type of floor, which can be purchased through your nearest Floer dealer.

Tip 4 Anti-slip

We often get the question: is laminate flooring suitable for pets or will they slip on the floor? It’s important to know that we can’t predict how your pet will behave on a floor. However, we can say that the chances of your pet slipping on laminate or vinyl floors are very low due to their non-slip finish. As you can see in the video, Max, Bella, Nala, and Pip did not slip on the floor! 😄

Tip 5 Floors that are safe

Safe flooring is one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a new floor. If you’re wondering whether our vinyl is safe for your home, there’s no need to worry. All of our vinyl floorings are responsibly made and have the REACH certificate, which means it meets the strictest European requirements. In fact, it’s as safe as children’s toys, which must also meet REACH requirements. Additionally, our Rigid Click Vinyl doesn’t release any harmful plasticisers, making it a safe flooring option for your home!
